Safe Driving Fair, Tick Warnings Top Week's News In Darien

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Here's a look at the top stories from last week across Fairfield County.

April showers may bring May flowers, but heavy snow can bring more ticks and more cases of Lyme disease. Experts fear an increase in disease-carrying ticks in the Northeast because the heavy snowfall protected the pests from a large kill-off. 

Sandra Reyes, a 78-year-old Ridgefield woman, died from injuries she suffered in a fire at her home in the Casagmo condominiums at 15 Cook Close. Her son was injured trying to save her and remained hospitalized. 

Samuel Crews, 55, of Danbury, was killed in a one-vehicle accident on Lake Avenue Extension just west of the Ethan Allen Inn. A city employee, Crews was driving a utility truck for the City of Danbury.  

Newly sworn in Police Officer Clinton Jarvis, 33, has joined the force in suburban New Canaan after a stint patrolling the streets of Bridgeport, the state's largest city.

Lawrence J. Herzing, a 45-year-old Greenwich resident, was sentenced to four years in federal prison for embezzling more than $9 million from Contrarian Capital Management, where he worked as the controller. He also must pay full restitution. 

Teams of middle school students descended upon the gym at Park City Magnet School to take part in the in the first Debate League events in decades in Bridgeport.

Jennifer Cushman, a 60-year-old Stamford native, has been reported missing in Nepal after a deadly 7.8-magnitude struck the area. Cushman, who now lives in New York City, was reportedly last in Kathmandu.

Darien High School students learned first-hand the dangers of unsafe driving as the Darien Police Department sponsored the “Students Against Destructive Decisions” (S.A.D.D.) Safety Fair in the school courtyard.

The Fairfield Police Department warned the public of a "credible threat" that "gangs were entering into partnerships to attack police" across the nation. This announcement came after widespread rioting after the death of a 25-year-old man in police custody in Baltimore.  

A Norwalk man and a Bridgeport man were arrested on gun charges after a report of shots fired on Lexington Avenue in South Norwalk. They were apprehended and arrested by Westport police officers after fleeing on I-95. 

The Westport Police Department's Railroad Parking Division has made changes to the permit wait list, which is now available online. Residents waiting for permits are reminded to update their information online or they will be removed.

A car ran a stop sign and pushed an SUV into Horseshoe Pond in Wilton. All of the occupants were able to get out of the car, but several people were taken by ambulance to Norwalk Hospital. 

Voters in Weston approved two of three questions on the ballot in Thursday's referendum on the 2015-16 budget. The town budget and the capital budget passed, but the Board of Education budget was shot down by five votes.
