NORWALK, Conn. – A possible tragedy was averted as a Metro-North train stopped within 10 feet of a Norwalk school bus with about 40 children on board that had stalled and was sitting on the tracks Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The incident occurred on railroad tracks along Broad Street that are part of the Danbury Branch between Main Avenue and Route 7.

The bus, which was coming from Silvermine Elementary School, had been traveling west on Broad Street between Main Avenue and Silvermine Avenue at about 4 p.m. Wednesday when the incident happened. The bus driver told officers that he had stopped and looked both ways as required at the railroad crossing, but as he moved onto the tracks the bus stalled due to a mechanical malfunction, according to police reports.

The bus, operated by First Student Inc., was left straddling the tracks.

A 911 call reported the stalled bus at 3:58 p.m., and the first officer arrived less than a minute later to assess the situation.

At this point, the railroad crossing arms lowered as a southbound Metro-North train approached, police said. The bus driver began an emergency evacuation of the students, leading them to a safe area nearby, police said.

The train engineer was able to stop about 10 feet from the bus, averting a possible tragedy.

Two children complained of minor injuries and were taken to Norwalk Hospital for further evaluation, police said. Replacement buses and parents took the remaining children home.

After the area was safely cleared, crews took the bus off the train tracks, and the train was allowed to continue.

"The officer on the scene commended the bus driver and the train crew for their excellent work," said a statement from Norwalk police.

Broad River:

You will always have your poor, your sick, your hungry. God is not an intervening God. If God is, always was and is all knowing, then God knew long before we ever crawled out of the primordial slime a bus would stall on the tracks. God has had an eternity to change that. When you loose Faith you have no hope. Without Hope, what is there? It's no wonder that today we have people doing awful things to one another and have no conscious about the consequences.
If you don't believe in Santa then you must refuse any gifts given to you in his name. If you don't then your are a discredit to yourself and a hypocrite If you don't believe in God then when you are forgiven your ignorance you must still refuse admittance into heaven. The Tooth Fairy doesn't deal with your future only proof of your parents love. Please tell me you didn't deny your children of that affirmation ! Within the core of each of us is the child we once were. This child constitutes the foundation of what we have become, who we are, and what we will be. When there is a stranded traveler in distress, do you simply pass on the other side of the road? Offer no assistance of any kind? If so, expect the same in return because there is no intervening God and you have taught your neighbor how to treat you. If you always do, what you've always done, you'll always get, what you've always got.You may be deceived if you trust too much, but you will live in torment if you do not trust enough

Humans need to TCO themselves. No god is looking out for us. If that is not obvious by now, then humans need to grow up. No Santa, no tooth fairy, no nothing. Get a grip.

meatball:

Quick! write your congressman! ... We need legislation establishing more government control over our nations buses or none of our children will be safe!!

Broad River:

We could certainly use seat belts and our children deserve drivers that don't drink form a paper bag as the drive our children to school.

jlevin:

Agreed. If god is to be praised if something bad doesn't happen, what are we to say when something bad does happen? I'm not so sure that god was checked in on this one.

Paige:

I imagine that answer would be found in the Book of Job.

Newyo4:

This is a man made story. We don't invest in maintenance, and then we praise God when we tragedy is averted. These poor children, who look to adults with trust for safety. Instead they end up with trauma. This could have been another massive horror story that is avoidable. I want to know what the maintenance record on that bus is!

sad situation:

Praise god, praise god, praise god !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Norwalk Spectator:

Amen, amen, amen!!!!!!!!!!!

Gloriagouveia:

God bless all involved in averting a tragedy of epic proportions. You are truly the heroes of a Christmas miracle and we are privileged to have you looking out for us.
