What's Happening in Darien This Weekend

DARIEN, Conn. — This Saturday marks the beginning of the Darien Library's weeklong Spring Book Sale, featuring hardcovers, paperbacks, audiobooks and DVDs. The sale will last through next week. Here are some other events happening this weekend.

Friday, March 16

9:30 a.m.: The YWCA Darien/Norwalk offers a class for parents who want to learn more about how to use Facebook.

11 a.m.: Attorney Michael Nedder of Nedder and Associates LLC will be at the Senior Center for 15-minute appointments with seniors. If you have questions about a living will, trusts, guardianship, disability planning or other legal matters, stop by to find the answers you need.

2 p.m.: The Darien Community Association kicks off its weekly movie class with the classic "The Quiet Man." Chosen for its Irish setting in honor of St. Patrick's Day, this romantic comedy stars John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. Movies are free and tea will be served.

7 p.m.: Students can celebrate the end of CMT testing with a bash at the Depot. This fun-filled night includes a DJ. Entry is $10 per person.

7:30 p.m.: The Darien Library screens "The Way." This film stars Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez, and is about an America doctor who takes part in a journey in France to honor his dead son. Rated PG-13.

Saturday, March 17

9 a.m.: The Darien Library kicks off its Spring Book Sale. Hardcover, paperbacks, audiobooks and DVDs are only $1.

2 p.m.: The Darien Library and the Middlesex Genealogical Society present "Exploring the 1940 Census" at the library. Christopher Zarr, an educational specialist at the National Archives facility in New York City, will present how you can uncover genealogical information using census information.

6 p.m.: The Darien Veterans of Foreign Wars Post celebrates St. Patrick's Day with a corned beef and cabbage dinner. All funds will go to support the VFW. Entry is $10 per person.

7:30 p.m.: Teens can celebrate Saturday night at the "Jungle Fever" dance at the Depot. Tickets are $10 per person.

Sunday, March 18

10 a.m.: Every Sunday the Post 53 EMS service hosts a free blood pressure screening at its headquarters, located at Zero Ledge Road.

3 p.m.: The Third Annual Community Spelling Bee will be held at Town Hall. Come cheer on your favorite teams from the community as they compete. All proceeds go to benefit the Depot.
