What's Happening in Darien This Weekend

DARIEN, Conn. – This weekend two Darien organizations will host screenings of classic movies. The Republican Club also kicks off its spring Speakers Forum, and Darien High School’s Theatre 308 performs “ West Side Story .” Here’s what else is happening this weekend.

Friday, March 23

• Mom’s Morning In – The Darien Community Association hosts Jeffrey Friedberg, the Bossy Frog, at 10 a.m. The children will be hopping to Friedberg’s music as he plays the guitar, banjo and harmonica.

• Film classic – The Darien Community Association continues its classes on classic movies with “An Affair to Remember” at 2 p.m. The showing is free, and tea will be served.

• Marilyn Monroe – The Darien Library hosts a screening of “My Week With Marilyn” at 7:30 p.m. This Academy Award-nominated film centers on Marilyn Monroe and Laurence Olivier during the filming of “The Princess and the Showgirl.”

• School musical – Darien High School’s Theatre 308 performs “West Side Story” at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15.

Saturday, March 24

• Stevenson speaks – The Darien Republican Club hosts its first speaker of the spring when First Selectman Jayme Stevenson gives a talk at 8:40 a.m. at the Darien Community Association. She will discuss regionalization through a council of governments and its potential impact on Darien. Doors will open at 8 a.m. for coffee and a light breakfast. There will also be a Republican straw poll for presidential candidates. The club’s annual meeting of members will follow at 9:45 a.m.

• Tag sale – St. Thomas More Church hosts its 21st annual Children’s Tag Sale at 9 a.m. The sale will feature children’s clothes, furniture, toys, baby gear and sports equipment. All proceeds go to the Norwalk Emergency Shelter, Malta House and St. Thomas More Church. The church is at 374 Middlesex Road.

• Dinner and movie – The Darien Library hosts a potluck dinner and film screening at 6 p.m. Bring a dish celebrating your family’s heritage. The library will provide beverages and utensils. Afterward, the film “Golden Door,” which tells the story of a poor Sicilian family that leaves Italy for America in the early 1900s, will be shown.

• School musical – Darien High School’s Theatre 308 performs “West Side Story” at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15.

Sunday, March 25

• Blood pressure – Darien’s Post 53 EMS service hosts a free blood pressure screening at 10 a.m. at its headquarters on Zero Ledge Road.

• Steak and eggs – The Noroton Fire Department hosts its annual Steak and Eggs Brunch fundraiser at 10 a.m. at Chuck’s Steakhouse. Tickets are $40 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. Entry gets you a $10 gift certificate to Chuck’s, as well as steak, eggs, coffee, muffins, hash browns, bloody Marys and mimosas.

• Self-defense class – The Depot hosts a self-defense workshop for moms and high school girls at 1 p.m. The class is taught by Michael Robin, a certified instructor with more than 15 years of experience. Register by e-mailing depotct@optonline.net or calling (203) 655-0812. The class costs $40.
