What's Happening in Darien This Weekend

DARIEN, Conn. — Among the events in Darien this weekend are a Special Olympics Torch Run, performances of plays written and performed by local residents and a celebration of the outdoors by the Darien Land Trust.

Friday, June 8

Keeping Current With Facebook : 8-9:30 a.m. Social media expert Rhonda Hurwitz will give a presentation at 341 Studios on how businesses can use Facebook to their advantage. Registration is $25. 341 Studios, 30 Old Kings Highway South.

Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run : 9:30 a.m. Members of the Darien police and Special Olympics athletes will receive the torch of the Special Olympics Summer Games at the Darien YMCA and run with it to the Norwalk town line, where they will hand it off to the next group of runners. All are invited to come cheer the runners as they proceed down Route 1 with the torch.

Artist Reception : 5-7 p.m. Atria Darien will host an opening reception for a new exhibit featuring local artists. Atria Darien, 50 Ledge Road.

“Tower Heist” Screening : 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. The Darien Library hosts two screenings of “Tower Heist.” Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy team up to rob the penthouse apartment of a Wall Street billionaire who cheated a friend. Darien Library, 1441 Post Road.

Saturday, June 9

Car Wash : 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Darien cheerleaders hold a car wash in the Depot parking lot. The Depot, 25 Heights Road.

Lego Club : 2-4 p.m. The Darien Library hosts Lego Club, where kids who love Legos can come and build collaborative projects together. Darien Library, 1441 Post Road.

Sunday, June 10

Celebration of the Woods and Streams : 11 a.m.-3 p.m. The Darien Land Trust hosts a celebration of the outdoors at Dunlap and Selleck's Woods. This event for the whole family features woodland and nature exhibits, discovery trails and butterfly garden. Admission is free.

Quilt Appraisal : 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Author Sue Reich will be at the Darien Historical Society to let you know what your quilts are worth. She will appraise up to three quilts per 20-minute timeslot. Disney Princess Luncheon : noon-4 p.m. The Melting Pot in Darien will host Belle, the princess from Disney's "Beauty and the Beast." Children will be able to enjoy a fondue lunch while taking part in a parade, craft activities and having their picture taken with the princess. Admission is $29.95 for adults, $19.95 for kids. Local Actors Perform at Darien Library : 1:30 p.m. Local actors will perform plays by local playwrights at the Darien Libary. The plays have been workshopped in the Catherine Lindsay Actors/Playwrights Workshop over the past several months. The plays are "Driven Crazy" by Nina Carrozelli, "Scrambled Eggs" by Mary C. Charest, "Answer the Question, Iris" by Stefanie DeLeo and Jenifer Menedis, "Not Far From the Tree" by Margaret D. Lindsey and "The Chapel Street Café" by Nicholas Troilo. Roots, Rock and Reggae Festival : 7 p.m. Rory's Restaurant hosts its second annual Roots, Rock and Reggae Festival to benefit Click it for Cassie and the Open Door Shelter in Norwalk. The event will feature music from artists such as I Anabass, Pasofino Social Club, Anthem, Finger Sleeve and Dr. B and the Brotherhood. Entry is $10, or $25 with an event T-shirt.
