DARIEN, Conn. – Anne Reighley Ferguson, a longtime Darien resident, died Jan. 29, surrounded by family. She was 85.
Ferguson was born April 27, 1927, in Montclair, N.J., to Lyster and Elizabeth Ford Reighley. She graduated from the Kimberly School in Montclair and Pine Manor Junior College in Wellsley, Mass., in 1947.
She worked briefly as a legal secretary before meeting her husband, Eric N. Ferguson, in 1948. They were married on May 11, 1951, in Montclair. After living briefly in Long Island, N.Y., and in New Jersey, the family moved to Darien in 1957.
She did volunteer work for St. Luke's Episcopal Church, the Community Chest and other local charities. She was an avid bridge player and tennis player at Wee Burn Country Club for more than 50 years.
Ferguson spent summers in Nantucket, Mass., and winters in Manalapan, Fla.. In Florida and Nantucket, she was involved with fundraising for local charities, including hospitals, the Salvation Army, Nantucket Conservation and other organizations focused on the needs of children.
In the last several years, Ferguson supported the nursing program at Norwalk Community College, a program at the Darien Library to supply books for the sight-impaired and the new Darien YMCA.
In addition to her husband, Ferguson is survived by a son, G. Neil (Bettina) Ferguson; two daughters, Elizabeth R. Ferguson and Barbara Ferguson (Brent) St. John; a sister-in-law, Patricia Reighley; and two grandchildren and a step-granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Darien. Edward Lawrence Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
