Anne Procter, 85, Of Darien

DARIEN, Conn. – Anne Carleton Procter, 85, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, in Oakland, Calif.

She was born on July 7, 1929, in Minneapolis. She spent her childhood with her four brothers in Minneapolis and on the family farm in River Falls, Wis. During her high school years, she moved with her family to Denver. She graduated from Wellesley College in 1950. After college, she worked as a researcher in the chemistry departments of Cornell Medical School and Northwestern Medical School. She met her husband, Arthur Wyman Procter Jr., in New York City.

They and their two daughters settled permanently in Darien, where their third daughter was born. Procter was a full-time mother until returning to work as an administrative assistant at Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance in Stamford. She worked there until her retirement.

After retirement, she played tennis and golf, volunteered at Person-to-Person at St. Luke's Parish, read extensively, traveled and visited friends and family.

She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur, in 2008.

Procter is survived by her younger brother, Fred Carleton; her three daughters, Ellen Procter Wilson, Margaret Procter and Katharine Procter; her stepdaughter, Prudence Procter Haines; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service and reception celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 2 p.m. at St. Luke's Parish.
