DARIEN, Conn. - Dr. Seymour Finkelstein of Darien died Jan. 1. He was 90.
Finkelstein was born in Johnstown, Pa., in 1923, son of Dr. Louis and Frances Finkelstein and lived there all but the last three years of his life. At the time of his death, he lived in Darien with his daughter Susan Kostin.
He attended primary and secondary school in Westmont, Pa., graduating from Westmont Upper Yoder High School in 1941. He graduated from the Temple University School of Dentistry in February 1946. Having completed Officer Basic Training at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, he then served as a captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps until his discharge in 1948. After getting married in 1948, he moved to Johnstown, where he joined in the practice of general dentistry with his father, Dr. Louis Finkelstein.
Finkelstein was a member of the Cambria County and Pennsylvania State Dental Societies and was a fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry. He was a past president and treasurer of the Beth Sholom and Beth Zion congregations in Johnstown. He was also active in the United Jewish Appeal and the Israel Bond Campaign committees in Johnstown.
Finkelstein is survived by his wife, Judith (nee Bloom) Lantos Finkelstein; children, Dr. Robert Finkelstein, James Finkelstein and Susan Kostin; stepsons, Steven Lantos and James Lantos; three grandchildren; a great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; first wife, Janette (nee Sapiro); and sister, Rita Shirley Glosser.
Funeral services will be held in Pennsylvania. The family will sit shiva Thursday, Jan. 9, at the Kostin's home in Darien.
