Dustin Arthur Smith, 31, Former Darien Resident

DARIEN, Conn. -- Dustin Arthur Smith, 31, a former Darien resident, died on Saturday, Feb. 14, in New Orleans.

Smith was born April 11, 1983, in New York and attended grade schools in Darien and graduated from King Low Heywood Thomas School in Stamford. He graduated from Wake Forest University where he received a bachelor of science in computer science with a minor in neuroscience in 2004. Dustin was invited by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to join its acclaimed Media Lab focusing on artificial intelligence. At MIT, Smith received a masters degree in science in the media arts and sciences in 2008 and in June 2014 received his doctorate.

Smith, a resident of Cambridge, Mass., since 2004, received media attention for his contributions to the new venture firm Beansprock. Smith and his business partner were recently featured in Wired magazine.

Smith is survived by his mother, Sharon Dorsey Wagoner of Darien; his father, Arthur Lawrence Smith of Houston; and stepfather Eric Wagoner of Darien.

He is also survived by his sisters, Erin Smith Ahrens, Alexis Noelle Wagoner of Darien, Allison Lauren Smith of Houston; brother, Roy Michael Smith of Houston; and brother-in-law Matthew Harrison Ahrens and grandparents Sheila and Joseph Dorsey of Rye, N.Y. and Lily Smith of Houston. 

He also is survived by his companion Marcio Antonio Cabral-Correa. Edward Lawrence Funeral Home handled arrangements. A memorial service is planned in Houston on March 11, at 1 p.m. at the Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, 11612 Memorial Drive, Houston.
