Edward Monroe Harris Jr., 90, Of Darien, Retired Pitney-Bowes Sr. Executive

DARIEN, Conn. - Edward Monroe Harris Jr., a resident of Darien, died Thursday, May 8. He was 90.

Harris was born in 1923 in Philadelphia, Pa., and was the son of Edward M. Harris, Sr. and Grace Wilson Harris. A graduate of Lower Merion High School and Yale University, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific from 1943 to 1946 and saw combat on Okinawa. He graduated from University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1949. He began his career at Sullivan & Cromwell and joined Pitney-Bowes in 1967, retiring in 1988 as vice-president, secretary and general counsel.

He was Chairman of the Darien Board of Education (1968 to 1971) and served as director of the Stamford Museum and Nature Center (president 1987-88), director of the Connecticut Humanities Council; director of the Edward W. Hazen Foundation; and director of the Connecticut Business and Industry Association. He was also an Elder of the Noroton Presbyterian Church.

Harris is survived by his daughter, Marion O. Harris of Fargo, N.D.; sons, Edward M. Harris III of Athens, Greece, and Peter D. Harris of Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and sister, Grace Harris Steiner of Zieglerville, Pa. He was predeceased by his wife, Marion Stevens Harris.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 20 at Noroton Presbyterian Chapel, 2011 Post Road, Darien. A reception will follow the service.
