Francine E. Buchanan, 82, Of Darien, Owned Placement Services

DARIEN, Conn. - Francine Elizabeth Buchanan of Darien died Wednesday, Oct. 16. She was 82.

Buchanan was born Dec. 14, 1930, in Ticonderoga, N.Y., daughter of Donald Francis and Mary (Ferris) LaPointe. She graduated from Connecticut College with a BA in English. Prior to moving to Darien she lived with her husband in Washington D.C. where she worked for the N.S.A. She was a member of the Darien community for 50 plus years. She was owner and director of Shepherd Personnel Placement Services, placement coordinator for both The Darien Convalescent Center and The Catherine Gibbs School in Norwalk, as well as the children's education director at St Paul's Church Darien. Her community service included the founding of "CanDo", an environmental action group focused on cleaning and protecting the rivers and streams in Darien, being a longstanding member of the DAR, serving multiple-terms on the Darien Housing Authority Commission, and being a founding member of St Paul's Church, Darien and later, a member of Church of the Apostles, Fairfield.

Buchanan is survived by her children, Jeanne E Buchanan, Mary R (Buchanan) Schneider, Donald B Buchanan (Patricia) and Jeffrey F Buchanan (Jan); six grandchildren; brother, Mortimer LaPointe; and sister, Elizabeth (LaPointe) Hand. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Warren D. Buchanan; sister, Mary LaPointe; and grandson, Kyle Schneider.

Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23 at Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Boston Post Road, Darien. A Celebration of her life will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24 at St Paul's Church, 471 Mansfield Ave., Darien. A private family interment will be held at Valley View Cemetery in Ticonderoga, N.Y. at a later date.
