Gertrude Rettig Diller, 102, Longtime Darien Resident

DARIEN, Conn. - Gertrude "Trudy" Rettig Diller of Darien died Friday, Oct. 17. She was 102.

Diller was born June 1, 1912, in Rummelsburg Germany, to Max K. Rettig and Martha Scharsitzke. She came to the U.S. in 1913 and moved to Darien in 1914 where she lived for 100 years. A 1930 graduate of Darien High School, she attended New York University. Before graduating she got a job during the Depression at Central Hanover Bank where she worked for 14 years as a foreign security analyst. She was a member of the RTM, president of the Darien League of Women Voters and vice chairman of the Republican Town Committee, director of Music for Youth and managed the Stamford Hospital Thrift Shop for many years. She was a member of the Norwalk Lions Club and the National Federation of the Blind.

Diller is survived by her daughter, Caryn Diller (Nicolas) Melia; son-in-law, Mickey Goulet; four grandchildren; two great granddaughters; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, William H. Diller Jr.; daughter; Sally Goulet; and brother, Max Rettig.

Calling hours are Tuesday, Oct. 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22 at Zion Lutheran Church, 132 Glenbrook Road, Stamford. Burial will follow at Fairfield Memorial Park in Stamford.
