Tighe was born June 9, 1937, in Yonkers, N.Y. He spent much of his life in the New York-Connecticut area. During his years at Iona College, he was inducted into its Hall of Fame for basketball and part of his legacy is Iona's Goal Club.
After college he pursued a professional football career for five years in the Continental League. He started his career in key management positions at RJR Nabisco, Heublein and Guinness. Upon retirement, he continued his career in the beverage industry as an entrepreneur. He was a longtime member of the Larchmont Shore Club and the Winged Foot Golf Club.
Tighe is survived by his wife, Elaine; children, Julie Carrabino (Joe), JD, Courtney, Billy; Jill Kelly (Joe), Kristi, Brittani, Joe, Kaitlin; Joe Tighe, Jr (Sabrina), Dominic, Bella, Fia; Joy Cummiskey (James), Kathleen, Jay, Elaina, Tighe, Caleigh; Jayne Jepsen (Christian), Coco, Thor; Jeana Roche (Kevin), Jillian, Kevin, Joe.
Calling hours are Thursday, March 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday, March 7, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, Greenwich, and a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 8, at the Church of St. Augustine, Larchmont, N.Y.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Joe Tighe Memorial Basketball Scholarship Fund at Iona College.
