Richard Donald Armiger, 82, Of Darien, Retired Citibank Executive

DARIEN, Conn. - Richard Donald Armiger, Jr., a 48 year resident of Darien, died Wednesday, Feb. 19. He was 82.

Armiger was born July 7, 1931, in Takoma Park, Md., he was the son of Richard Donald Armiger and Bernice Nordby Armiger. He grew up in Silver Spring, where he graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in 1949. He enrolled at Marietta College, where he studied for a year before entering the Coast Guard in 1950. He served as an officer on a buoy tender, the cutter U.S.S. Evergreen, in the North Atlantic and later as an instructor of maritime etiquette. In 1954, he returned to Marietta and graduated in 1957 with a B.A. in philosophy and creative writing.

He began his 40 year career in Human Resources working at Western Electric, Melpar, Inc. in Falls Church, Va. , and Vitro Laboratories in Silver Spring, Md., before joining Citibank in New York City in 1965, where he worked until his retirement in 1996. He was a vice president of Human Resources with senior responsibilities both internationally and in the U.S.

After his marriage he moved with his family to Darien in 1965. He was a member of Noroton Yacht Club where he was involved in the cruising and junior sailing programs.

Armiger is survived by his wife, Ann Wold Armiger; daughter, Jessie Armiger Moynihan (Timothy) of Lincoln, Mass.; son, Benjamin Nordby Armiger (Shelley) of Chestertown, Md.; sister, Susan Popescu of Bethesda, Md.; brother, G. Kent Armiger of Chestertown, Md.; and three grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28 at Saint Luke's Parish, 1846 Post Road, Darien.
