Robert John Flynn, 62, Darien Resident, Executive With Shipping Firm

DARIEN, Conn. -- Robert John Flynn, 62, of Darien, died on Friday, Feb. 20.

He was born on Aug. 6, 1952, to Sally and Robert Flynn and grew up in Bridgeport. He graduated in 1970 from Notre Dame High School, where he met his wife of 37 years, Roseanne.

After high school, Flynn earned a bachelor of science degree from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London. He was a U.S. Coast Guard officer from 1974-1979 and was commanding officer of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Cape Strait.

He joined the commercial ship broker, Mallory, Jones, Lynch, and Associates, in 1979, shortly after the firm's inception, became a shareholder in 1988 and was named partner in 1991. He was president of the firm at the time of his death.

Flynn was a member of The American Bureau of Shipping and the Society of Maritime Arbitrators and previously served as the nonexecutive chairman of Omega Navigation Enterprises.

Flynn's interests ranged from attending the New York Metropolitan Opera, clay-pigeon shooting, riding his Harley-Davidson, croquet and a lifelong fascination with fine cars. He also loved listening to New York Yankees games on the radio at Green Hill Beach in Rhode Island and hosting gatherings with his family.

He was a member of the Country Club of Darien, the Union League Club, the Weston Gun Club and the Green Hill Beach Club in Charlestown, R.I.

He was predeceased by his wife, Roseanne, in 2011 and is survived by his daughter, Christine and her husband, Robert Devine.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home at 2119 Post Road, Darien,. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at St. Thomas More Church, 374 Middlesex Road, Darien.
