Rosemarie Joosten, 81, Of Darien, Started Special Education Program

DARIEN, Conn. - Rosemarie Joosten, a longtime resident of Darien, died Sept. 15. She was 81.

Joosten was born Jan. 15, 1923, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Carl Martin and Katharina Riedel, and was raised in Chicago, Ill. She was a 1944 graduate of the University of Chicago. She settled in Darien in 1951 with her family. After obtaining her Master's degree in special education at Fairfield University in 1972, she started a Special Education program in Darien. After moving to Goshen in 1981, she volunteered in the local hospice program in Northwestern Connecticut. As a deacon of the Church of Christ Congregational in Goshen, she was a member of the congregation participating in the choir and other activities. Six years ago she moved back to Darien to be nearer to family.

Joosten is survived by her daughters, Helga Garland (Steven) of Hingham, Mass., Christine Joosten of New York City; son, Eric Joosten (Mar) of Darien; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and sister, Anita Locher of Germany. She was predeceased by her husband, Hugo Joosten.

A private burial service is planned.

Donations in memory of Joosten may be made to Church of Christ Congregational in Goshen.
