To the editor:
I am a taxpayer in Darien. I am a former member of the RTM and the Board of Education.I have spent the last 15 years volunteering in under-served schools. I serve on the Board of the School of Education at Syracuse University. You might say I am an education junkie.
I am also a mom of former special ed students and I am appalled at what is happening in our district. I have followed special ed in Darien and elsewhere for thirty years. I never imagined that the Superintendent and the Board of Education, who is responsible for the hiring and firing of the superintendent, would be so lax as to allow Darien to be out of compliance with State and Federal law. The fact that we are not serving our own students is bad enough. The fact that we have spent $200,000, to defend incompetence and illegal actions by the board's employees, underscores the fact that we need a change and I would say a BIG change.
I had a chance to sit down and talk at length to Callie Sullivan and Shannon Silsby. I was gratified to learn that they understand the depth of the problems facing our district and are not afraid to take appropriate actions.
If you want to see your tax dollars spent on educating all of Darien's children and not on defending the actions and inactions of adults, please join me and vote for Shannon Silsby and Callie Sullivan for the Board of Education.
