Detectives obtained an arrest warrant Friday morning and took Bertony Thompson into custody in connection with the murder of Jackie Silverman, 62, on Sept. 10 in an apartment at 41 Wolfpit Ave., said a statement Friday from Sgt. Terrence Blake
Thompson has been charged with murder and was held on a court-set bond of $1 million. Thompson will be in Norwalk Superior Court on Monday, Sept. 15.
Detective Bureau Lt. Thomas Mattera commended Detectives Thompson, Fitzmaurice and Cisero for their work on the investigation.
Silverman was discovered in the apartment late Wednesday night when officers responded on a welfare check on a report of a suicidal male resident, police said.
When officers arrived, they were unable to make contact with the residents and forced entry into the apartment, police said. They found Silverman's body and Thompson unresponsive in a bedroom, police said.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and he was taken to Norwalk Hospital for treatment, police said.
An autopsy performed Thursday ruled the cause of the woman's death a homicide by asphyxiation, police said.
The homicide is the second in Norwalk this year, following the May death of 43-year-old Jimmy Martinez. Police identified Vamond "Wooley King" Elmore as the suspect in that case. Elmore was shot and killed by U.S. Marshals in South Carolina in July.
