The theft was reported Friday, July 24, at 8 a.m. The 36-year-old husband and 35-year-old wife met with police and said they had loaded a moving truck in New York City the previous day and traveled to Darien. When they unpacked the truck at their new apartment at the Avalon complex on Hollow Tree Ridge Road, they found that the box was missing, police said.

Police said the box contained several expensive handbags, family heirlooms, family jewelry and silverware. The couple had hired a New York-based moving company, which used three regular employees and a day laborer to move the couple's belongings, according to police.

During the trip from New York to Darien, they made one stop at a warehouse to load up a few more items, but nothing was taken from the truck, police said.

The incident remains under investigation.
