Counterfeit $20 Bills Used At Darien Stop & Shop, Police Say

DARIEN, Conn. -- Two people recently passed off more than $500 in counterfeit bills at a Darien Stop & Shop, according to police.

The incident occurred on July 21 at the Stop & Shop in the Goodwives Shopping Center on Old Kings Highway South and was reported to police on July 24. According to police a man walked into the store at 1:12 p.m. and bought some Pampers wipes, a birthday card and a $300 prepaid MasterCard gift card, worth a total of $317.95. He paid for the items with 16 $20 bills, which later turned out to be counterfeit, according to police.

Less than an hour later, another man entered the store and purchased some Goldfish crackers, a Sunny Delight lemonade, a graduation card and a $200 prepaid MasterCard gift card, for a total of $217.45. He paid for his items with $20 bills that turned out to be counterfeit, according to police.

Police said the men were captured on surveillance video, and may be connected to a counterfeit ring operating out of New Jersey. The incidents are also being investigated by New Jersey state police and the U.S. Secret Service.
