DARIEN, Conn. – Darien officers charged one person with driving under the influence and two more with marijuana possession at a DUI checkpoint in town last week, police said.
Darien and Stamford Police conducted two joint checkpoints in Darien last week. On Thursday evening, the officers were stationed on Hoyt Street, and on Friday evening into early Saturday morning they were located on Tokeneke Road.
A driver arrived at the Hoyt Street checkpoint Thursday with glassy eyes, the odor of alcohol on her breath and “animated, slow movements,” according to the police report. The 46-year-old New Canaan woman failed field sobriety tests at the scene and was unable to perform the breath test, police say.
The driver, Kathleen Dagostino, of Country Club Road in New Canaan, was charged with driving under the influence. She was released after posting $250 bond and is due in court Aug. 5.
That same night two separate cars arrived at the checkpoint with the odor of marijuana coming from the cars, according to police reports. In one case K-9 officer Zulu indicated that there was marijuana in the car, which police found in the center console. In the second case, the car’s passenger admitted to having a small amount of marijuana in her purse and turned the bag over to police without incident, police say.
Police issued infractions for possession of less than a half-ounce of marijuana in both cases. Both offenders were Stamford residents.
