Mark Whitehead, 52, of Tulip Tree Lane flagged down a Darien police patrol car while walking on Old Kings Highway North on the evening of Feb. 5, according to an officer’s report. Whitehead appeared intoxicated at the time and asked the officer for a ride to the gas station to buy cigarettes, police said. Instead the officer drove him back to his home, police said.

Less than a half-hour later, police received a call from a nearby resident reporting a gunshot in the same area. A neighbor told police that she heard Whitehead yelling obscenities at passersby from his home’s windows, and she heard what sounded like a single gunshot, police said. Officers heard howling and banging noises coming from inside the house, according to the police report.

Officers entered the home to check for a possible medical emergency, and found Whitehead alone inside his home, police said. He was warned not to yell obscenities outside or out his window, police said. No weapons were found in the home.

As officers left the house, they began hearing Whitehead yell expletives directed at a neighbor out his window, according to the police report. He also yelled for the officers to get off his property, police said. He then locked his front door and did not respond to officer’s requests to come outside, police said.

Darien police filed for a warrant on a charge of breach of the peace based on the incident, which was served at Whitehead’s home on March 4. He was released after posting $250 bond, and is due in court March 14.
