The Darien Police Communications Center received a 911 call on Thursday, Jan. 4 from a cell phone. The dispatcher was unable to speak with the caller but heard arguing and someone yelling for help, police said. The location of the call was traced and police responded to a home in the Tokeneke section of Darien, according to police.
When they arrived, officers met with 45-year-old Mitchell Kelly, who said he and someone else had been in an argument, and that the other person had left the scene, police said. Kelly told officers that he and the other person had grabbed each other's phones during the argument, according to police.
A short time later, the other person was located at a local restaurant. During an interview, the other person told officers that they had been in an argument with Kelly and had grabbed Kelly's phone, according to police. At that point Kelly became physical by flailing his arms, and grabbing the other person's phone when that person attempted to call 911, according to police.
The other person also told officers that at on point, Kelly grabbed their throat, according to police. During the interview, officers observed minor injuries to the person's neck area, according to police.
At that point Kelly was placed under arrest and taken to Darien Police headquarters, where he was charged with third-degree strangulation, third-degree assault and interfering with an emergency call. He was issued a $2,500 bond and given a court date of Jan. 5.
