DARIEN, Conn. — Darien police arrested a man accused of trying to steal watches from David Harvey Jewelers on Wednesday.

Gorham Valentine of Mount Vernon, N.Y., was charged with criminal attempt at third-degree larceny, interfering with an officer and resisting arrest. He posted $50,000 bond and will appear in court Feb. 3.

Police received a call from David Harvey Jewelers about a suspicious man in the store, later identified as Valentine. Employees told police that a man believed to be Valentine had come into the store in 2012 and asked about high-end watches and left without buying one. During that same time frame, a man matching Valentine’s description had entered Henry Reid Jewelers in New Canaan under the same pretense, grabbed a $30,000 watch and ran out without paying for it , according to police reports.

Plainclothes officers observed Valentine in David Harvey Jewelers on Wednesday and saw him take a phone call. Police believe the call was from an accomplice acting as a lookout for police. As the officers approached Valentine, he fled the store and started running toward the Darien train station, where he was taken into custody.
