A Darien police officer on patrol pulled over a car on Hoyt Street on Sunday after his in-car electronic license plate reader found that the plate on a car did not match the Department of Motor Vehicle’s records for the registration, police said. During the traffic stop, the officer found that the driver was not licensed and the car was not registered, according to the police report.
Kristian Hernandez, 24, of Cortland Hill Street in Stamford, was a passenger in the car at the time, police said. A records check showed that Hernandez was wanted on a warrant by Hartford Police, according to police reports. He was taken to Darien Police headquarters before being turned over to Hartford Police.
Hernandez has since been charged with second-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor, according to state judicial records. The arrest stems from an incident in 2007, when Hernandez was 17 years old, according to state records.
The specifics of the case have not been released due to the ages of the people involved, police said. But the charge in question applies to sexual intercourse involving a person between the ages of 13 and 15 and someone three years or more older, according to the state penal code.
Hernandez was released after his arraignment Monday and is due in court next April 21.
