DARIEN, Conn. — Members of the Darien Police Department will be participating in a rally in Norwalk on Thursday as part of the One Billion Rising campaign to end violence against women.

One Billion Rising, launched nine months ago, encourages women and those who love them to join together to "rise, dance, act" in defiance of injustices suffered by women and girls around the world. The movement's name is based on a statistic from the United Nations that one in three women will be beaten or raped in her lifetime. One Billion Rising has gained support from thousands in more than 160 countries.

The Darien Police Department is partnering with the Domestic Violence Crisis Center for the rally. The center assists more than 3,500 victims of domestic violence per year across Fairfield County. It is the sole provider of domestic violence services in Darien.

The rally will take place on the Norwalk Green from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday. Supporters are encouraged to stop by and rally, dance and ring bells. At the conclusion of the rally, churches in Stamford, New Canaan, Norwalk and Darien will ring their bells in support of One Billion Rising.
