DARIEN, Conn. – Darien residents have been targeted by a local scammer using a phony kidnapping in an attempt to get money, police said.

A Darien resident got a call last week from a man claiming to have his brother. The caller spoke in broken English, but told the man that he had struck his brother with a gun before hanging up, according to the police report. The Darien resident then contacted his brother, who was not in any danger.

The caller did not demand ransom in this case, but a man calling from the same number had done so in previous calls to Darien and Milford residents, police said. The calls came from a Bridgeport-based cell phone number, and police have not been able to contact anyone in attempts to dial the number directly, according to police reports.

Anyone with information on this or any scams should contact the Darien Police at 203-662-5300.
