The 28-year-old woman received a call from someone on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 6, claiming that they had been in a car accident with her brother and were holding him hostage until they got money to repair the damage, police said.
The woman told officers that the call came from 203-361-7440 and that the caller had a Hispanic accent, police said.
The caller told her that he and his friends were on the run after killing a man in the Bronx, N.Y., and demanded that she wire them money, police said. They told her that they would kill her brother if they did not receive the money, police said.
The woman was told to withdraw $2,000 from the bank and wire it to them, police said. She wired $950 to them at a CVS in Riverside, and another $920 from a CVS in Fairfield, police said.
While on the phone, she received another call from 860-205-6811, telling her to drive north to meet her brother, police said. She was then instructed to wire an additional $1,000 before they would turn over her brother, police said. She became skeptical and asked to speak to her brother, at which point the caller hung up, police said.
