Police responded to Hoyt Street just before 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 27, on a report of a disabled vehicle. Officers arrived to find a black BMW parked on the side of the road with the engine running. The car was in the mud, surrounded by leaves, police said. The doors were locked and there was nobody near the car.

Because the car was partially in the travel portion of the road, a tow truck was called to take it away. As the truck was being taken out of the mud, it caught fire. The Noroton Heights Fire Department was called, and the flames were quickly extinguished. Police said that the fire was most likely caused by the heat from the engine on the dry leaves.

Police spoke to a neighbor, who said that he had seen the car parked around 1 p.m. A woman and two children were standing nearby, and were picked up by a Ford SUV and left shortly thereafter. Police contacted the owner of the car, a New Canaan woman, who said that her car had suffered from mechanical issues. She had parked it and had someone pick her up, and told police that she had planned to have it moved the next day. She said that she was unaware that the engine had been running when she left it.
