DARIEN, Conn. -- A Chicago man working as a door-to-door salesman was charged with burglarizing homes on Hollow Tree Ridge Road in Darien on Friday, police said.
Stanley Bradford, 21, was charged with second-degree burglary, third-degree burglary, sixth-degree larceny, criminal attempt at fifth-degree larceny and soliciting without a permit, police said. He was held on $50,000 bond and will appear in court Monday.
A woman on Hollow Tree Ridge Road was working in her yard Friday afternoon when she saw a man, later identified as Bradford, crouched by her car, which was parked in her garage, police said.
She told police that he was holding a bag of dishrags that she keeps in the garage. When she confronted the man, he told her that he was selling magazines, police said. She ordered him out of the garage and called the police.
When she went inside, she saw that a computer she keeps upstairs had been disconnected, removed and was now downstairs near the open garage door, according to police.
While officers were en route to the woman's home, they received a report of an iPod stolen from a nearby house, police said. The residents reported that the iPod had been kept on a table near the unlocked front door, and that the residents were home but unaware that the house had been entered, police said. A man matching Bradford's description was seen walking away from the area, police said.
Officers searched the area and found Bradford walking down a driveway, police said. He was detained, and police said he was out of breath and visibly shaking. Several electronic devices from both houses were found in Bradford's possession, according to police.
Bradford said he is employed by Urban Development Solutions based in Michigan, and that he is in the area selling magazines door-to-door, police said.
