The accident occurred at about 5:35 p.m. Tuesday just south of the Darien rest area on southbound I-95, State Police said.
Jimmy Munoz, 35, of Yaemich Drive, was driving south in the center lane when he lost control of his Honda Pilot and swerved toward the center median divider, State Police said. Munoz’s car “then swerved right and traveled toward the right shoulder prior to the southbound Darien rest area,” according to the accident report. The car went over the right shoulder and into a grassy, wooded area, where it struck several trees, State Police said.
Munoz's vehicle “came to a final uncontrolled rest and caught fire, becoming fully engulfed with the driver trapped inside the vehicle,” the State Police report said.
He died during the crash, State Police said, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Munoz was identified by his driver’s license, and his family was notified late Tuesday, State Police said.
