Driver Hits Pole, Charged With Drunk Driving In Darien

DARIEN, Conn. – A Stamford man was charged with driving while intoxicated after driving into a utility pole in Darien last week, police said.

The accident was reported on Hollow Tree Ridge Road about 5:30 a.m. on Aug. 20, according to police reports. The driver lost control during a tight curve and swerved off the road and into a Connectcut Light and Power pole, police said.

The driver suffered minor injuries in the collision, according to the police report. Connecticut Light and Power needed to replace the pole because of the damage done in the crash, police said.

Erwin Martinez, 19, of Matthews Street in Stamford told police that he had drunk “three or four beers several hours earlier,” according to the police report. He failed field sobriety tests at the scene, and officers also found that his driver’s license had been suspended, police said.

Martinez was charged with driving while intoxicated under the age of 21, driving under suspension and a failure to drive on the right. He was released after posting a $250 bond, and is due in court Aug. 30.
