The principal of Mill Hill Elementary School requested assistance from the police school safety unit Monday, police said. He suspected a school custodian, Anthony J. Piccolo, was in possession of possible drugs, according to police.

During the investigation, officers seized a small amount of marijuana, two small containers that contained a controlled substance, and drug paraphernalia, police said. The items were seized from a vehicle parked outside the school, police said.

Police did not release the name of the controlled substance or identify the owner of the vehicle.

Piccolo, a 48-year-old resident of Fairfield, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, illegal possession near a school, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia, police said.

Piccolo was released on a written promise to appear in court on Oct. 7, police said.

Mill Hill Principal Kevin Chase sent a letter home to parents Monday informing them of the arrest, according to the Fairfield Citizen. Piccolo was suspended from his job indefinitely and will not be allowed access to any of the school district’s properties, the Citizen said.
