Sgt. Sofia Gulino said the fire was discovered by neighbors, who saw flames coming out of the rear of the home after 7 a.m. The fire department arrived and were able to douse the blaze quickly, she said.

"Initially it looks like it started in the kitchen area and then went upstairs," Gulino said of the fire.

No one was home at the time, Gulino said.

The home was purchased by Sadhna and Suchitra Gupta for $230,475 in December 2014.

Sadhna Gupta was outside the home Monday morning, looking over the damage. She said the home is a rental property that she and her husband own. They live in Armonk, N.Y.

She said she doesn't have an estimate of the amount of the damage to the home but described it as extensive.
