New Canaan Fire Chief Jack Hennessey said the fire started in the garage and was contained to that part of the structure.

"We kept it in the garage. It didn't make it into the main house, but the garage has very heavy damage," he said. "We are still investigating the cause."

He said there was some smoke damage in the house.

No injuries were reported, Hennessey added.

The residents were outside of the home when firefighters arrived and they told firefighters no one remained in inside, he said. Firefighters did a search of the home for any occupants and didn't find anyone, he said.

Hennessey didn't know how many occupants there were in the home.

Firefighters from Wilton, Norwalk, Pound Ridge N.Y., and Vista, N.Y., responded to the scene, he said. Stamford firefighters provided staffing at the New Canaan Fire headquarters as town firefighters fought the blaze, he said.

The fire was in a home at the end of a long private driveway off Cheese Spring Road in northern New Canaan, near the New York border.

Firefighters drew water from a nearby pond, where a dry hydrant had recently been installed, Hennessey said. The dry hydrant is a pipe that is installed into water that allows firefighters to attach a hose to it to enable them to draw water in areas like Cheese Spring Road that has no municipal hydrants installed.

"It helped us out a lot because we needed a couple of tanker loads to put this fire out," he said.

The fire was under control shortly after 1 p.m., Hennessey said.

According to the Town of New Canaan's website Mary Sommers purchased the home for $1.72 million on Aug. 12. The 4.53 acre, 4,358 square foot home has an appraised value of $2,429,900.
