The burglary was discovered Saturday morning by the homeowners' nanny and housekeeper. The employees discovered a step ladder in the backyard, which was used to gain access to a second-floor window, which was pushed in, police said.

Several chairs inside the home were overturned, and the master bedroom had been searched through. The burglary is believed to have occurred between 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 15, and 7:15 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, according to police. Nobody was home during that time.

Among the items taken were numerous pieces of jewelry and watches, as well as several women's shoes and purses, police said. The thieves also took an undisclosed amount of cash, according to police reports.

Police do not yet have a total value of the items taken, but it is believed to be more than $10,000. The window that was broken to gain access to the home was valued at $2,500, police said.

Darien detectives are investigating the incident. There is an alarm system in place at the house, but it is unknown whether it was activated.

Police have obtained surveillance video from the time of the incident, but it did not have night vision and police are working to get the video enhanced.
