On Wednesday, Feb. 18, a man walked into the Darien police station at 5 p.m. and reported that he had a hand grenade in his car, police said. The man said he had been doing some work on a home on Gardiner Street when he had found the grenade in the basement under some paperwork, police said.

Police said that it was a cast-iron grenade with the pin still in it.

Darien police contacted the Stamford police bomb squad, who arrived on the scene to remove the grenade from the man's car and properly dispose of it.

Stamford police conducted tests on the grenade to discover whether it was live, including X-raying it, but the results were inconclusive. They were able to safely remove the grenade and will store it properly until it is destroyed.
