Darien Police and the Noroton Fire Department were dispatched to Goodwives River Road at around 7:30 p.m. on Monday, June 19 on a report of a fully engulfed vehicle fire. After the fire was extinguished, the Darien Fire Marshal and police detectives inspected the 2007 Mercedes Benz and interviewed the driver.
The driver said that while he was driving, he noticed smoke coming from underneath the front passenger seat and also got a message on the car's display instructing him to seek vehicle service immediately, police said. As the smoke got heavier, he pulled the car to the side of the road, got out, and within a short time the car had completely gone up in flames.
The Darien Fire Marshal's office will be investigating further to determine the origin and cause of the fire. Police said that at this time there is no evidence to suggest anything other than a vehicle malfunction or accidental cause.
