Needle Found On Darien's Tokeneke School Playground

DARIEN, Conn. -- A hypodermic needle was found on the playground of Tokeneke Elementary School in Darien on Sunday morning, according to police.

The needle was found about 11:30 a.m. in a mulched area on the south side of the playground by a resident whose children were playing at the time. Officers were able to secure the needle, which was found with its protective cap still on, police said.

The needle is not the same type that is usually associated with illicit drug use, police said. It is also not similar to the needle and syringe combinations recently found at another elementary school in Darien, according to police. Tests on the needle revealed no presence of illegal narcotics.

Police are reminding residents not to touch any discarded hypodermic needles that they might find in public areas. Contact the police, and an officer will come to pick up and properly dispose of the needle. Police are working with Tokeneke School staff, and the incident remains under investigation.
