A man wanted by Stamford police bolted out of the back door of his girlfriend's home and led officers on a foot chase through a nearby river before he was taken into custody in front of Stillmeadow School early Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Travis Boyke, 22, of 27 Aiken St., Apt. A, Norwalk, is facing numerous charges, including charges stemming from his alleged involvement in a check-carting scheme, Capt. Richard Conklin said.

"He has been very active in that venue," Conklin said.

In the scheme, fraudulent checks are deposited into an account and then money is withdrawn from the account before the bank realizes what happened, he said.

Stamford officers had gone to his Norwalk residence with the assistance of Norwalk Police earlier Wednesday but were unable to find Boyke, Conklin said.

Members of the Narcotics and Organized Crime unit returned to Stamford and staked out his girlfriend's residence at 39 Austin Ave., he said.

Shortly after 1 p.m. a Mercedes-Benz drove into the residence, Conklin said. Believing Boyke might be in the vehicle, officers approached but discovered his girlfriend and some friends were in the vehicle, Conklin said.

As officers dealt with the vehicle, Boyke ran out the back door, through the Rippowam River and onto Stillwater Road, Conklin said. Boyke ultimately was arrested in front of the nearby Stillmeadow School at 800 Stillwater Road, he said.

Police had a number of warrants for his arrest on charges of failing to appear in court, two counts of violation of probation, second-degree forgery, conspiracy to commit second-degree forgery and criminal attempt at third-degree larceny.

He was also charged with interfering with an officer in connection with the police pursuit.

His total bond for all the charges was $135,000, Conklin said.

An associate in the check-carting scheme was arrested about a week ago, Conklin said, and more arrests could be forthcoming in the case.
