Marisol Garcia, 37, of Norwalk was charged with first-degree larceny, embezzlement and 10 counts of second-degree forgery. She was released on a promise to appear in court Sept. 22.

Police received a complaint in August from a doctor's office on Post Road that an employee was taking checks and depositing them in her personal account.

Darien police investigated and found that Garcia, who had worked in the office since January, had taken 30 checks from insurance companies and deposited them into her account, police said. The checks from Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield and United Healthcare, totaled $23,954.07.

During the investigation, police said they received information from the doctor's accountant that Garcia had also taken 10 checks written from the office to vendors, and altered them to make them payable to her. She then deposited them into her accounts, police said. These 10 checks totaled $13,438.48. The total amount that Garcia is believed to have stolen is $37,392.55, according to police.

Police spoke with Garcia, who admitted to making the deposits in order to help pay for living expenses and to help a family member, according to police reports.

Police applied for an arrest warrant, and she was taken into custody Friday. Police said Garcia was also on probation, stemming from a 2006 arrest in Shelton, where she was found guilty of first-degree larceny.
