The accident took place at around 9:30 p.m. on Hanson Road west of Linda Lane, police said. When officers arrived, they determined that a 21-year-old Darien man was driving a 1999 Chevy Blazer and traveling west on Hanson Road when the car went off the right side of the road, hit a stone wall and slammed into a tree.

The front right passenger, a 21-year-old Darien man, was ejected from the vehicle, police said. The right side of the car sustained major damage.

The car then careened across both lanes of Hanson Road and hit a second tree on the shoulder of the eastbound lane, where it ultimately came to a rest, police said.

The front seat passenger was taken to Stamford Hospital with very serious injuries, and remained in the Intensive Care Unit in stable condition, police said. A rear passenger, a 20-year-old Darien man, suffered facial injuries, police said. Both the driver and the rear seat passenger were taken to the hospital, but were treated and released for minor injuries.

The Darien Police Accident Investigation Team was called to the scene to investigate the crash. Hanson Road was closed between Middlesex Road and Hummingbird Lane for three hours for scene processing and reconstruction.

Police said that initial investigation revealed that excessive speed was a contributing factor in the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
