The woman was discovered in the apartment late Wednesday night, according to police.

Officers responded to the apartment at 41 Wolfpit Ave. at 10:40 p.m. Wednesday on a welfare check, polcie said. The complainant had received a message from a male resident indicating that he might be suicidal, police said. When officers arrived and were unable to make contact with the residents, they forced entry into the apartment, police said. They located the 62-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man unresponsive in a bedroom, police said.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the man was taken to Norwalk Hospital for treatment. Police said that an autopsy performed Thursday ruled the cause of the woman's death a homicide by asphyxiation. The man is considered a person of interest, police said.

"Residents should know that this is an isolated incident involving the female victim and the male," police said in a statement.

Police said that the Detective Bureau is working rapidly to bring the investigation to a close. Anybody with information is asked to contact Detective James Thompson at 203-854-3184.

The identities of the victim and the man have not yet been released.

The homicide is the second that Norwalk has seen this year, following the May death of 43-year-old Jimmy Martinez. Police identified Vamond "Wooley King" Elmore as the suspect in that case. Elmore was shot and killed by U.S. Marshals in South Carolina in July.
