DARIEN, Conn. -- A Darien man was charged with driving under the influence after crashing into another car and sending three people to the hospital last week, according to police.

At around 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 25, police responded to the intersection of Old Kings Highway South and Andrews Drive in Darien on a report of a car accident. When they arrived, they learned that a 2008 Ford Expedition had crossed the double-yellow line and struck an oncoming car, police said. They saw the Expedition in the westbound lane of Old Kings Highway South, with heavy front end damage, police said. The other car, a 2017 Nissan Rogue, was in the eastbound lane and also had heavy front end damage, police said.

Three occupants of the Nissan, ages 39, 35 and 10, were all transported to Stamford Hospital for evaluation. A witness told police that the driver of the Expedition had attempted to leave the scene, but his car was not operable.

Officers spoke with the driver of the Expedition, identified as 38-year-old Michael Sheppeard of Darien, who was standing by his car. Police said that he appeared unsteady on his feet, and the odor of alcohol was emanating from his person. He failed a field sobriety test and was taken into custody.

Police said that Sheppeard submitted to breathalyzer tests, which showed his BAC at .3021 and .2986. The legal limit is .08. He was charged with driving under the influence and failure to drive right. He posted a $250 bond and will appear in court on Oct. 6.
