Police: Email Scammer Tries To Snare Darien Teen In Pet-Sitting Scheme

DARIEN, Conn. – A Darien teen who is a pet-sitter on Care.com was roped into a check cashing scheme earlier this month, according to Darien Police.

The victim was contacted on May 1 by someone claiming to be a Care.com care specialist named "Barbara B," who advised the victim to contact "Nicole Doherty" regarding a job helping a family move from Canada to Darien, Police said. 

"Nicole Doherty" agreed to pay the victim in advance and send a key to the apartment as well. The victim received a check for $2,965 on May 8. She deposited the check and was later contacted by "Nicole" to withdraw the excess cash. When the victim attempted to withdraw the money, she learned the check was fake, police said. 

The victim suffered no financial loss. Authorities are still investigating the matter.
