FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Fairfield police officers and firefighters used their brute strength to free a 86-year-old man who was pinned between his pickup truck and garage, officials said.

A witness told police that she saw the pickup hit the garage in the home at Stratfield Road in Fairfield at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday as she was headed next door for a family party. She saw no one in the car when she was going past, police said.

At 5:56 p.m., she said she heard screams, police said. When she walked up the driveway, she saw the man pinned between the pickup and the garage and called 911, police said.

The victim, Franc Us, was pinned at his abdomen between the truck door and garage wall, police said. His legs were outside the car and his upper body was inside the car, police said. The car was in drive but the ignition was off, police said.

The Fairfield Fire Department responded with Engine Three, Ladder Two and Car Three.  Lt. John Cronin called for the additional assistance of Ladder One for manpower and extrication equipment, while firefighters began taking care of Us.

Firefighters weighed different ways of freeing Us, mechanical and pneumatic methods. Due to the wedged-in victim, complexity of the area and tight access, low-tech brute strength teamwork was used.

Police officers and firefighters joined forces to free the patient. American Medical Response was on scene and transported the patient to Saint Vincent’s Hospital with severe injuries, fire officials said.

On Monday, Us is intubated and sedated at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport. Police were still waiting to talk to him about the crash. He was reported in serious condition on Sunday night.

"We are checking for the possibility that drugs and alcohol were a factor," said Fairfield police Lt. James Perez.

The case is currently under investigation by the Fairfield Police Crash Investigation Unit.
