DARIEN, Conn. - A man was charged with having heroin while attempting to return stolen merchandise to CVS in Darien, police said.
Michael Refalo, 50, of Winsted, was charged with criminal attempt at sixth-degree larceny, possession of narcotics and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released on a promise to appear in court Dec. 18.
Police responded to CVS Friday afternoon on reports of an attempted shoplifting. The store’s management told the officers Refalo had attempted to return a pair of headphones that were suspected of being stolen, police said. The security code on the $100 pair of headphones had been scratched off, police said.
While talking to Refalo, officers reported seeing him place his hand into the back of his pants. When asked what he was doing, Refalo said he had a syringe in his back pocket, according to police reports. The substance in the syringe was later identified as heroin, police said.
Refalo was taken to headquarters, where he told police a friend had stolen the headphones earlier that day from a CVS in Newtown.
