Police: Norwalk Man Almost Hit Darien Officer With Car

DARIEN, Conn. – A Norwalk man was charged last week with almost hitting a Darien police officer with his car in November.

William Henneberry, 33, was charged with second-degree reckless endangerment, reckless operation of a motor vehicle and two counts of disobeying the signal of an officer. He posted $5,000  bail and is scheduled to appear Dec. 13 in court.

The arrest stems from a Nov. 19 incident, in which two police officers were coordinating traffic at the intersection of Post Road and Leroy Avenue while workers were installing a new gas line. One of the officers stopped a car traveling east on Post Road. As he did, police said a gray minivan attempted to drive around the stopped car while sounding his horn. The officer approached the minivan while signaling for him to remain stopped, according to police reports. The driver of the minivan ignored the signal and sped off, causing the officer to jump back in order to avoid being hit, police said.

The second officer held up his hands and tried to get the driver of the minivan to stop, but the driver went around the officer and sped off on Leroy Avenue, according to police reports.

Police determined the minivan belonged to Henneberry’s mother and Henneberry. Police located the minivan and left several phone messages in an attempt to get in contact with Henneberry, but the messages were not returned, police said. A warrant was issued for his arrest.

On Dec. 3, an officer spotted Henneberry driving into the Darien Library parking lot. The officer recognized him and he was taken into custody.
