The scooter was a 2013 Yamaha Zuma valued at $2,500. It is uncertain when the scooter was actually stolen, police said.
The owner reported that the scooter had been left in the driveway outside the garage with the key in it, police said. He told police that he last saw the scooter on Wednesday, July 22, or Thursday, July 23.
He and other members of the family left the house that Thursday and Friday and returned Sunday, July 26. Two days later he noticed the scooter was missing and called police.
Darien police recently issued a advisory to scooter owners, saying that thefts were on the rise in town. Police recommended that owners leave their scooters out of sight and invest in quality locks. Owners should also not leave their keys in their scooters, police said.
The theft remains under investigation.
