Stamford Man Charged With Credit Card Fraud In Darien

DARIEN, Conn. -- A Stamford man tried to use a fraudulent credit card to purchase a $7,500 Rolex in Darien, police said. He was also charged for similar crimes in Stamford.

Kum Po Ng, 57, was charged with third-degree criminal attempt at larceny and illegal use of credit card after Stamford police told Darien police on Wednesday, Nov. 21 they had him in custody on a $200,000 bond. He was held on an additional $100,000 bond.

Police said there is an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer on Kum Po Ng, preventing him from posting bond because he is a Malaysian national in the U.S. on a visa. He appeared in court on Friday.

An informational flyer was circulated by Stamford police in January, warning of an Asian male targeting high-end jewelry stores and attempting to buy expensive Rolex watches with fraudulent credit cards. A photo of the man was included. A Darien detective took this flyer to David Harvey Jewelers on Post Road to make them aware of the situation, and a manager said that the man had been in the store and tried to buy a watch in October, police said.

The man, identified by officers as Kum Po Ng, showed his credit card, but when asked to also produce a driver’s license, he said that he left it in his car and left the store and never returned, police said. Video surveillance of the transaction showed the man was the same person mentioned in the police flier, police said.
